saw our inaugural poker tournament. A couple of grand got you a seat
at the table for an £8,000 winning pot, whilst £6,000 went to the
runner up and third place saw the cost of your seat returned (ok
....... so I've added a couple of zeros!!) Things were tense to
begin with and sunglasses were out in force early on. Opening
exchanges saw the chips slowly move to the
right-hand side of the table where
experienced gambler
Daryl
and 'poker virgin'
Lee were enjoying the best
of the hands.
Andy lost a couple of tight hands (and
his head) and was then forced to go all-in against
Matt, whose 'bluff' turned out to be a straight ....... an early bath for
Andy.
Gary started winning hands (much to his
surprise ....... and everyone else) and the chips slowly started to move in his
direction. Meanwhile
Mike was still trying to work out
whether a King was higher than an Ace, and no matter how much vodka he drank he
still couldn't work it out ....... no surprise then that Mike was next to take a
bath.
Paul was sweating (which was as much to
do with the coat zipped up to his ears as the poor hands he was getting), whilst
I significantly improved my chances but hitting a straight flush on the river
card (which resulted in my name being changed to 'jammy git' for the rest of the
night). A couple of big hands for Matt and Paul saw Gary's stack of chips almost
vanish before his eyes, as the bath beckoned, and the chips slowly made their
way over to the
left-hand side of the table. An all-in
against Paul meant it was game over for Gary.
Daryl and Lee were also suffering some big losses and with the blinds doubling
with each departure, chips were running out fast on the right-hand side of the
table. Meanwhile, by some small miracle I remained in the game, nursing my chips
(and my beer) and sitting with my
sunglasses
on, wondering who turned out the lights.
Matt and Paul took control of the game and the elimination of Daryl and Lee,
after a tense double all-in, meant I was guaranteed third spot .......
unfortunately that was all I managed.
Matt and Paul were left to fight it out and it wasn't long before Paul was
forced to go all-in to maintain his chance of winning. Unfortunately Matt's hand
was too good, and we had our very first winner.
